Colombia Secures €15 Million Loan to Expand Vaccine Production

The financing supports the second phase of VaxThera’s commercial-scale facility, funding construction, equipment validation, and technology transfer. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce up to 250 million doses annually. EIB Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle noted that this expansion will bolster Latin America’s ability to respond to future health crises by anchoring manufacturing and research capabilities within Colombia.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative includes a €1.5 million technical assistance grant directed at three vaccine candidates for high-priority infectious diseases. The project, backed by the European Commission under the Global Gateway initiative, aims to bridge the funding gap for complex biotechnology ventures. VaxThera CEO Professor Jorge Emilio Osorio stated that the investment will accelerate innovation and foster a pipeline of specialized local talent, transforming the company into a critical regional hub for biological medicines and pandemic preparedness.
