Copenhaver was seated in the bleachers during the campaign rally when a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop. While the bullet grazed the former president’s ear, Copenhaver was struck in the arm and abdomen. The attack also claimed the life of Corey Comperatore, who died shielding his family, and wounded David Dutch.
Following the shooting, Copenhaver faced a grueling recovery process that included multiple surgeries to address a transected colon, kidney damage, and nerve loss in his leg. In June, he and his wife, Marianne, filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging that the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security failed to maintain adequate security at the venue. The legal filing characterized his injuries as permanent and life-altering. While his family confirmed his passing, they have not publicly specified whether his death was a direct consequence of the wounds sustained during the rally.
