Opposition plans impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The initiative follows reports in The Indian Express detailing administrative friction, including claims that the Goa Chief Electoral Officer sought assistance from Delhi eight times in one week without receiving a response. These concerns compound previous allegations that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded 14 separate objections over 10 months regarding the commission’s internal decision-making. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has escalated the situation by filing a formal police complaint, arguing that legal immunity granted under the 2023 Election Commissioners Act does not protect the CEC from prosecution for unilateral actions performed outside of a collective body.

Congress leaders have intensified their rhetoric, with Randeep Singh Surjewala alleging that the current exercise has led to the deletion of 13 million voters across 19 states. He specifically pointed to Karnataka, where he claims 1.08 million voters were removed. Senior leader Pramod Tiwari questioned why the Bharatiya Janata Party is actively defending the commission, suggesting that the BJP's involvement indicates deeper institutional culpability. While the Election Commission maintains that its decisions are reached unanimously and disputes the characterization of its operations, the opposition remains firm in its demand for an immediate halt to the revision process and a criminal investigation into the Chief Election Commissioner.
