The broad-based correction signals a retreat from risk-heavy assets, with financials leading the decline. Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer at PL Capital, noted that the downturn exceeds routine profit-taking, as persistent geopolitical instability and elevated borrowing costs force investors to recalibrate their portfolios. Sectoral weakness was widespread: Nifty Metal dropped 1.99%, while private banking stocks suffered a decline exceeding 2%. Auto and FMCG segments also retreated, falling 1.46% and 1.18% respectively.
Global cues provided little support for local sentiment. While Japan’s Nikkei 225 managed a 0.89% gain, most regional peers mirrored the downward trend, with Singapore’s Straits Times and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closing in the red. Commodities faced similar pressure, as gold dipped 0.61% to Rs 1,50,378 per 10 grams and silver fell 1.23% to Rs 2,33,067 per kg. Market participants now anticipate continued volatility until crude pricing and global interest rate trajectories show signs of stabilization.
