EIB Invests €19 Million to Stabilize European Power Grids

The European Investment Bank is injecting €19 million into Reactive Technologies to bolster grid stability across the continent. By financing the company’s real-time measurement platform, the bank aims to mitigate outage risks and accelerate the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar into aging infrastructure.

EIB Invests €19 Million to Stabilize European Power Grids

Reactive Technologies’ GridVerix platform provides operators with critical data on inertia and voltage stability, effectively mapping how a network handles sudden disruptions. As energy grids face increasing pressure from data centers and the transition to clean power, this real-time visibility becomes a vital safeguard against systemic failure. EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer noted that such tools are essential for keeping pace with the rapid expansion of renewable generation.

The capital infusion is split between research and commercial rollout: €7 million will fund development at the company’s Oulu, Finland facility, while €12 million is earmarked for deployment across the European Union. CEO Marc Borrett emphasized that the venture debt arrives at a turning point, where the rising complexity of electricity networks requires smarter management to avoid costly energy curtailment. By reducing the need to throttle renewable output, the technology could improve operational efficiency and potentially lower management costs for the sector.
