IDB Grants Argentina $400 Million to Overhaul Security and Prisons

Argentina will deploy a $400 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank to modernize its federal security apparatus and reform prison management. The initiative, known as PROSEFE, targets 22 departments across nine provinces, aiming to equip law enforcement with better investigative tools and expanded social reintegration programs for inmates.

The funding supports the Ministry of National Security in streamlining coordination between the Federal Security Forces, the Gendarmerie, and the Naval Prefecture. A cornerstone of the program involves specialized training for more than 11,000 personnel, focusing on the tactical skills required to dismantle complex criminal networks. By integrating advanced information systems, officials intend to improve operational planning and data-driven decision-making across the country’s security landscape.

Beyond law enforcement, the program addresses the human side of the justice system by expanding educational and vocational opportunities within federal correctional facilities. These measures are designed to reduce recidivism by preparing detainees for life after incarceration. This loan, which carries a 25-year maturity and a 5.5-year grace period, aligns with the IDB’s 2025–2028 country strategy to bolster institutional efficiency and support vulnerable populations throughout the region.
