Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Retrial Sex Assault Case

The 74-year-old producer, once a titan of Hollywood, appeared in court in a wheelchair as he faced the consequences of his assault on Haley, a former production assistant. Despite the verdict, Weinstein maintained his innocence while offering a measured apology for the pain he caused. His defense team, led by Jacob Kaplan, had pushed for a lighter sentence, citing his deteriorating health, including diagnoses of blood cancer, congestive heart failure, and kidney issues.

This outcome follows years of procedural upheaval. After New York’s Court of Appeals vacated his 2020 conviction in 2024, citing prejudicial testimony from women not involved in the case, prosecutors moved to retry him. The subsequent trial resulted in a split verdict, where jurors convicted him of the assault on Haley but failed to reach an agreement on charges involving aspiring actress Jessica Mann. Prosecutors ultimately dropped the remaining rape charge rather than pursue a fourth trial, paving the way for Wednesday’s sentencing.

Haley, who detailed the 2006 assault at his Manhattan apartment, spoke of the long-term emotional toll of seeking justice. Her testimony—which included Weinstein asking if they were 'closer' following the attack—remained central to the case. Weinstein, who remains under medical care at Bellevue Hospital, still faces a pending resentencing in Los Angeles regarding a separate 2022 rape conviction. He has vowed to continue his appeals, insisting he will be proven innocent.
