Abhishek Banerjee Demands Arrest of CEC Over Alleged Voter Roll Purge

Banerjee, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, demanded the issuance of a Look Out Circular against the CEC to prevent him from leaving the country, calling for his immediate arrest. He alleged that this pattern of manipulation extended beyond West Bengal, citing similar irregularities in Haryana and Bihar. The TMC National General Secretary framed these actions as a direct consequence of a flawed appointment process, asserting that officials selected via Prime Ministerial nomination remain beholden to the ruling party rather than the constitution.

These accusations coincide with reported internal friction within the Election Commission. According to recent findings, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi have registered objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months regarding decisions made and orders issued without their participation. Banerjee emphasized that the dismissal of an impeachment motion against the CEC—conducted without explanation—further underscores a systemic lack of accountability. He dismissed the BJP's national standing as pathetic, suggesting the party’s aggressive political maneuvers have ultimately failed to secure their intended dominance.
