Why Young Adults Click: The Psychology of AI-Driven Ads

A new study reveals that young adults perceive enjoyment and utility as distinct triggers when encountering in-feed advertisements. While entertaining content drives social sharing, practical usefulness—bolstered by AI transparency—serves as the primary catalyst for conversion, suggesting that personalization alone is no longer enough to secure a purchase.

Why Young Adults Click: The Psychology of AI-Driven Ads

Researchers Zhan Huang, Yan Li, and Depeng Du surveyed 609 social media users aged 18 to 35 to map how algorithmic targeting influences consumer behavior. Their analysis identifies six core advertising characteristics: entertainment, informativeness, personalization, intrusiveness, incentives, and credibility. The data shows that while high-production value ads generate positive emotional responses, they do not inherently signal product value to the consumer. Conversely, ads that provide clear, believable information are rated as useful but often lack the viral potential of purely entertaining posts.

Transparency regarding AI recommendations plays a critical role in this dynamic. When platforms clarify why a specific product appears in a user's feed—citing past browsing habits or interactions—the perceived utility of the advertisement increases, directly strengthening the user's intent to buy. However, the study notes that transparency does not significantly alter the relationship between enjoyment and purchase intent. Advertisers who rely on intrusive placement risk alienating their audience, as these interruptions consistently result in lower ratings across both emotional and functional metrics. While the research tracks self-reported intentions rather than verified transactions, it highlights a clear path for digital platforms: balancing algorithmic openness with content that genuinely serves the user's immediate needs.
