Election Commission Weighs Trinamool Congress Leadership Crisis

The Election Commission of India now holds the authority to decide which faction controls the Trinamool Congress name and its signature symbol. With by-elections looming in Nandigram and Rejinagar, the regulator must resolve a bitter leadership dispute between supporters of Mamata Banerjee and the faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee.

Both camps have submitted the required Forms A and B to formally stake their claims ahead of the October 6 polls. Following the conclusion of nomination scrutiny, Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee stated that the final determination rests with the Commission and the local Returning Officer. This institutional intervention follows a direct challenge to Mamata Banerjee’s authority, creating a volatile environment for the upcoming vote.

The contest is particularly significant in Nandigram, a constituency already fraught with political history following Suvendu Adhikari’s departure. As both groups continue to field competing candidates, the Commission’s ruling will dictate which faction gains legal recognition, effectively deciding the ballot access for the party’s historical identity.
