Chidambaram, and Manish Tewari, pointing out their prior involvement in the Parliamentary Standing Committee that originally recommended the tiered revenue structure. He argued that the accusations of an "UPI tax" are a strategic attempt to manufacture political slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi rather than a substantive critique of fiscal policy.

The Union Finance Ministry maintains that the framework specifically targets select person-to-merchant transactions exceeding Rs 2,000, while ensuring that smaller transactions and everyday users remain exempt from additional charges. Despite these assurances, opposition figures continue to warn that the policy, slated to take effect on October 15, 2026, will place an undue financial burden on ordinary citizens.
