Judge Brinkema Rejects Google Breakup, Demands Oversight

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema has declined to dismantle Google’s sprawling advertising empire, opting instead for a structural leash. In a 106-page ruling, the court ordered the tech giant to install an internal antitrust compliance monitor, aiming to curb anticompetitive gatekeeping without severing its core business units.

The decision offers a reprieve for the company, which faced aggressive pressure from the Department of Justice to divest major portions of its ad tech stack. While the ruling stops short of a forced breakup, it mandates significant operational shifts designed to invite competition into a market long dominated by the firm’s proprietary tools.

Google maintains that dismantling these assets would harm the small businesses relying on its ecosystem, and the company confirmed plans to appeal the oversight requirements. Despite these legal hurdles, the company’s advertising division—responsible for 73% of total revenue—remains structurally whole as the firm pivots to defend its market share against emerging AI-driven competitors.
