Meloni Scraps Road Tax for Millions in Pre-Election Bid

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has pledged to eliminate road taxes for 14.5 million cars and motorcycles throughout 2027, a maneuver carrying a €2 billion price tag. Designed to alleviate the burden on drivers, the policy arrives as her conservative coalition struggles to maintain its footing against rising political challengers.

The exemption applies to motorbikes and roughly 70% of smaller vehicles, though it restricts eligibility to a single car per citizen. Meloni framed the initiative as a direct response to public frustration, declaring it the removal of one of the most detested levies in Italy. The relief is scheduled to remain in effect from January 1 through December 31, 2027.

Political analysts view the move as a strategic effort to secure voter support before next year’s national elections. Meloni’s administration currently trails the centre-left in polling and faces mounting pressure from National Future, an emerging far-right party. However, the plan invites scrutiny regarding fiscal sustainability, as Italy’s public debt continues to hover at 139% of GDP, leaving critics questioning how the government intends to cover the multibillion-euro shortfall.
