AirBaltic Secures Court Approval for Restructuring Plan

A U.S. bankruptcy judge has cleared the path for airBaltic to continue operations under Chapter 11 protection, granting the Latvian flag carrier immediate access to a €140 million liquidity injection. This court-sanctioned move allows the airline to maintain its current flight schedule while navigating significant fiscal pressure.

The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York authorized the debtor-in-possession financing as part of a broader €350 million stabilization package. By securing these funds, the airline maintains its ability to honor passenger bookings and meet ongoing financial obligations despite the volatility exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Iran.

Management now pivots toward complex negotiations with bondholders and aircraft lessors to finalize a formal reorganization strategy. While several bondholders have lodged formal objections, the carrier intends to reduce its debt load by shedding surplus aircraft and renegotiating fleet rental agreements. The airline anticipates completing this restructuring process by June 2027, provided the court grants final approval to the proposed measures.
