The Arctic Opens for Business and Geopolitical Rivalry

The scale of the transformation is captured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2025 report, which notes that summer sea ice has shrunk by 28 percent since 2005. This physical retreat is directly fueling a surge in maritime traffic and resource exploration. Russia is leading the commercial charge, utilizing its Northern Sea Route to bypass southern chokepoints. By August 2026, Russian tankers had already transported six million barrels of crude to Asian markets—nearly doubling the volume seen in the previous year. For Moscow, this route offers a dual advantage: faster transit times to Asia and a shield against Western-imposed shipping inspections.

Europe is responding to this shift by deepening its footprint in the region. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently unveiled a €200 million partnership package for Greenland, targeting critical raw materials, digital infrastructure, and sustainable mining. While framed as economic development, the move serves as a clear signal of Europe’s intent to secure a stake in the region’s future. The stakes are amplified by shifting political currents, including persistent calls from the United States for greater influence over Greenlandic territory. As commercial, environmental, and military interests converge, the Arctic is no longer merely a site for scientific inquiry. It has become a contested space where the presence of infrastructure, from ports to satellite arrays, is fast becoming the new standard for exerting influence.
