S&P 500 Slides as AI Shift and Middle East Tensions Fuel Volatility

The S&P 500 retreated on Tuesday as software stalwarts stumbled under the weight of AI-driven market anxiety and escalating geopolitical instability. Software sector outlooks soured following the emergence of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra. Jed Ellerbroek, a portfolio manager at Argent Capital Management, pointed to this innovation as a catalyst for potential disruption, forcing a reassessment of traditional software valuations. Salesforce shares dropped 4%, while ServiceNow and Intuit both logged 5% declines.

Contrasting the software slump, semiconductor stocks surged on fresh industrial partnerships. Intel climbed 10%, and Qualcomm gained 2.8% after announcing a strategic AI chip collaboration with Amazon. These gains were tempered by broader market unease regarding the Middle East. Tensions spiked following attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure by Iran-backed groups, driving oil prices higher and complicating the outlook for global inflation and central bank policy.
