The James Webb Space Telescope has provided a high-definition glimpse of the Lion Nebula, NGC 2392, piercing through its iconic gaseous mane to document the final stages of a star’s life. The new infrared imagery offers a refined look at the complex dust structures shaped by the star's terminal radiation.

While the Hubble Space Telescope first mapped the nebula's lion-like silhouette in 2000, Webb’s NIRCam and MIRI instruments now expose the intricate clumps of dust and ionized gas previously obscured by the nebula’s haze. This celestial structure is the result of a lower-mass star that, unable to sustain nuclear fusion, grew unstable and began pulsating. Instead of a violent supernova, the star systematically shed its outer layers, creating the expansive shells of gas that define the nebula's current form.

At the center of this display sits a white dwarf, the superheated remnant of the original oxygen-rich star. This core emits high-energy radiation that pushes material outward, effectively sculpting the "lion's face" while simultaneously destroying dust in its path. Astronomers continue to study these expanding bubbles and complex rings to understand how such stellar remnants influence the surrounding interstellar environment as the nebula evolves over thousands of years.
