Israel Closes British Consulate in Retaliation Over Settlement Sanctions

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar ordered the immediate closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem, escalating a diplomatic standoff with London. The decision serves as a direct retaliatory strike against the UK’s recent imposition of sanctions on products manufactured in Israeli settlements across the West Bank.

Beyond the closure, Israel is severing several key collaborative ties. British representatives are now barred from a U.S.-led coordination mission for Gaza, and the UK’s involvement in training Palestinian Authority forces in the West Bank has been terminated. Furthermore, the Israeli government confirmed that specific British officials and nationals will face travel bans.

Saar described the UK’s policy as morally distorted, leveling sharp criticism at his British counterpart, Ed Miliband, for what he characterized as outrageous lies. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the measures, a move that arrives as the country braces for national elections scheduled for late October.
