Oil Surge and Geopolitical Risk Pressure U.S. Stock Futures

Oil prices jumped to their highest point since late July as Middle East hostilities flared, dragging S&P 500 and Dow futures into the red Tuesday. The spike introduces a fresh layer of uncertainty for traders already navigating a week defined by high-stakes inflation data and shifting Federal Reserve rate expectations.

Investors are bracing for the release of the Producer Price Index on Thursday and the Consumer Price Index on Friday. These reports arrive at a critical juncture, serving as primary indicators for the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision. Market participants currently assign a 60.6% probability to a rate hike this month, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Policy uncertainty remains high under Chair Kevin Warsh. Michael Matousek, head trader at U.S. Global Investors, highlighted that Warsh’s communication style lacks the transparency seen under predecessor Jerome Powell, complicating market forecasting. With energy costs rising and inflation reports looming, the combination of geopolitical instability and monetary policy ambiguity suggests that volatility will persist throughout the remainder of the short trading week.
