India’s Vegetable Oil Glut Triggers Port Gridlock

Ten-day delays for vessel unloading are paralyzing major Indian ports as a massive influx of vegetable oil leaves shore tanks at capacity. Refiners, having aggressively stockpiled in anticipation of festival demand that never arrived, are now struggling to clear the surplus, forcing a sudden shift in global trade expectations.

The bottleneck is most severe at Kandla, the country’s primary gateway for edible oil imports. Traders initially rushed to secure palm and soyoil at lower prices to meet seasonal consumption targets, but the expected surge in retail sales failed to materialize. With storage facilities overflowing, refiners are now left holding excess inventory, effectively stalling the supply chain.

Industry officials indicate that this domestic logjam will force a sharp reduction in new orders for October. By curbing purchases, Indian importers are poised to shift the pressure back onto major producers in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Argentina. As demand cools, international benchmark futures for palm and soyoil face renewed volatility, reflecting the cooling appetite from the world’s largest vegetable oil buyer.
