China’s military is rapidly pivoting from basic robotics demonstrations to serious battlefield preparation, integrating humanoid machines into tactical research. While currently limited by energy and autonomy constraints, the People’s Liberation Army is actively building the infrastructure and training pipelines required to turn these bipedal systems into viable urban combat tools.

The transition gained significant momentum between 2025 and 2026, as military institutions began testing humanoids against specific combat requirements. Research now prioritizes perception and manipulation, aiming to overcome the unpredictability of real-world environments. This push is underpinned by a massive industrial base, with Chinese manufacturers responsible for approximately 95% of global humanoid robot shipments in 2025. Military procurement notices indicate a shift toward practical experimentation, including a 2026 budget allocation of roughly $300,000 for systems designed to label terrain and motion data for robotics training.

Strategic Integration and Urban Combat

Urban warfare remains a primary focus, with studies from the National University of Defense Technology modeling assault forces that combine humanoids with unmanned ground vehicles to clear buildings room by room. State-owned defense conglomerate Norinco has also entered the space with its Fuxi robot, designed for sentry duty and all-weather reconnaissance. While these platforms currently lack the autonomy to make lethal decisions—and rely heavily on human teleoperation—the goal is to eventually enable machines to operate alongside troops in confined spaces like tunnels and ship interiors. Despite international concerns regarding the ethics of autonomous weapons, Beijing continues to scale its investment, positioning its domestic robotics sector as the foundation for a new class of battlefield systems expected to mature within the next decade.
