A 43-foot-long predator met a violent end 66 million years ago in a Canadian salt marsh. New neutron imaging of the fossilized remains of Scotty, the largest Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered, reveals the dinosaur died from a severe rib fracture sustained during a brutal confrontation with another prehistoric rival.

Discovered in Saskatchewan in 1991, Scotty weighed an estimated 19,500 pounds, dwarfing two adult elephants. While the sheer scale of the skeleton is remarkable, the specimen yielded a rare scientific treasure: preserved soft tissue. To study this fragile material without causing structural damage, researchers from the University of Regina collaborated with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to employ neutron imaging.

This non-invasive technique allowed for microscopic, 3D analysis of the fossilized rib. Mauricio Barbi, a physics professor at the University of Regina, likened the find to winning the lottery, noting that the bone contained a complex network of mineralized blood vessels previously unseen in the fossil record. These vessels formed in an attempt to repair the trauma, providing clear evidence of the animal's final struggle. Doctoral candidate Jerit Mitchell, who leads the project, believes this technology will unlock similar secrets hidden within existing museum collections, fundamentally shifting the approach to paleontology.
