The atmosphere inside the cabin shifted instantly when the unidentified traveler turned on his seatmate. Retired law enforcement officer Juan Mejia and passenger Richard Olenick intervened after witnessing the man wrap his hands around the victim's neck. With flight attendants providing zip ties and flexible restraints, the two men pinned the aggressor to a first-class seat, securing him further with duct tape to prevent additional harm to those on board.
American Airlines confirmed the diversion, praising the crew for their handling of the emergency. Upon landing, the man was taken into custody by local law enforcement and emergency medical personnel. The FBI is currently interviewing witnesses and coordinating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland to determine if federal charges are warranted.
