US Destroys Iranian Tankers After Missile Barrage Targets Navy Ships

The U.S. Central Command confirmed strikes against three Iranian crude oil tankers on Saturday, a direct retaliation after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at two American warships. While the U.S. vessels evaded the unprovoked assault, the subsequent counterstrike signals a shift toward dismantling Iran’s economic infrastructure.

The engagement involved the destruction of two IRGC-linked tankers, M/T Downy and M/T Stark 1, near Kharg Island and Jask. A third, unladen tanker was disabled in the Gulf of Oman. No U.S. personnel sustained injuries during the exchange. Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of Central Command, framed the operation as a calculated economic reprisal, warning that the U.S. will continue to target Iran's vulnerable oil fleet if its forces are threatened.

Tehran’s Tasnim news agency reported the strike near Kharg Island, confirming crew evacuations but claiming no casualties. This escalation follows a broader trend of regional instability, underscored by President Donald Trump’s recent rhetoric regarding the strategic importance of Kharg Island, which historically facilitates 90 percent of Iran’s crude exports. The destroyed vessels were part of a shadow network providing financial backing for the IRGC and its regional proxies.
