The study, published in Science Advances, outlines a method to dehydrate the stratosphere by deploying high-tech aircraft to seed the upper atmosphere with ice. As these particles rise into the coldest regions, they would trigger the conversion of vapour into ice, causing it to fall and effectively thinning the moisture blanket that traps heat. NOAA physicist Joshua Schwarz, the study’s lead author, emphasized that the concept is currently purely theoretical, intended to map out potential future research rather than provide an immediate solution.
While the team estimates that injecting two tons of ice per week could mitigate roughly five per cent of the warming caused by fossil fuel emissions, the proposal faces significant skepticism. Experts warn that deliberate atmospheric manipulation risks unpredictable environmental consequences. University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver compared the strategy to a spiraling chain of ecological blunders, noting that tinkering with complex systems often invites cascading failures. Crucially, the researchers maintain that this process is not a substitute for mandatory carbon emission cuts, but a potential, albeit high-risk, supplement for a warming world.
