Varda Space Capsule Captures Raw Re-entry Footage

A three-foot-wide capsule tore through the Earth’s atmosphere at Mach 25, delivering an unfiltered view of its high-speed descent into the Utah desert. Varda Space Industries released the raw footage on February 28, documenting the final moments of a mission that successfully tested space-based pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The footage, which has since surpassed 1.4 million views on X, captures the capsule’s fiery transit against the backdrop of the planet's blue horizon. Unlike simulated recreations, this video provides a stark, authentic look at the friction-heavy reality of re-entry. The capsule, weighing less than 90 kilograms, originally launched in June 2023 aboard a Rocket Lab Photon spacecraft.

Beyond the visuals, the flight served a specific industrial purpose: the production of ritonavir crystals within a microgravity environment. Despite regulatory hurdles involving FAA licensing and Air Force approvals, the craft touched down at the Utah Test and Training Range as planned. The capsule is now headed to Varda’s Los Angeles facility, where the pharmaceutical samples will undergo rigorous analysis by Improved Pharma to determine the success of the orbital experiment.
