Researchers have successfully cultivated miniature organs from stem cells harvested from amniotic fluid, marking a shift in prenatal medicine. By growing lung, kidney, and intestinal organoids during an active pregnancy, the team can now monitor fetal development and test personalized treatments for congenital conditions long before a baby is born.

The study, published in Nature Medicine, details how a team led by Dr. Mattia Gerli and Professor Paolo de Coppi extracted viable stem cells from the amniotic fluid of 12 pregnant women. Unlike previous methods that relied on adult cells or tissue from terminated pregnancies, this technique utilizes material collected during routine prenatal testing. These organoids, measuring less than a millimeter, act as functional 3D models that mirror the biological characteristics of the specific fetus.

This methodology provides a direct window into conditions like congenital diaphragmatic hernia, where a hole in the diaphragm restricts lung growth. In a proof-of-concept trial, the team observed how these lab-grown models responded to clinical interventions, confirming their utility in gauging treatment efficacy. Beyond diaphragmatic defects, the researchers anticipate this approach will assist in studying cystic fibrosis and various malformations of the gut or kidneys. By allowing clinicians to test drugs on a patient’s own biological tissue prior to birth, this development moves prenatal care toward a more precise, individualized model of intervention.
