Nepal’s Prime Minister to Pivot Toward UN Climate Diplomacy

The cabinet finalized the decision to send the Prime Minister following a surge in pressure to address the Himalayan region’s climate vulnerabilities on the global stage. While Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal was originally slated to lead the delegation, the scale of the August 26 disaster necessitated a higher-level diplomatic presence. Officials confirmed that preparations are currently underway for the trip, which will see the Prime Minister arrive in New York shortly before his address and depart immediately after.

Joining the Prime Minister in the delegation will be his advisor, Kumar Byanjankar, along with a press contingent. The high-level General Debate, where Shah is expected to center his remarks on climate-induced disasters and regional risk, begins on September 22. Despite the logistical challenges of leaving the country during an ongoing recovery effort, the government views the international platform as an essential venue to highlight the urgent humanitarian and environmental crises currently facing Nepal.
