Assam Police Overhaul Targets Faster Justice and Housing Shortages

With conviction rates and infrastructure gaps in focus, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed Assam’s senior police leadership to expedite criminal investigations. The directive mandates that chargesheets for all criminal cases be filed within 60 to 90 days, marking a push to modernize the state’s legal and policing framework.

The two-day conference in Dergaon addressed the urgent need to bridge the chasm between the state’s 91,000 police personnel and the current availability of only 10,000 housing units. Sarma announced plans to triple that capacity to 30,000 units while expanding the force with two new battalions and a planned recruitment of over 5,000 youths next year. These administrative shifts coincide with the implementation of the three new national criminal laws, which the government intends to utilize as a catalyst for improving judicial outcomes.

While the government focuses on security infrastructure, the opposition landscape in Assam is shifting. Leader of Opposition Wazed Ali Choudhury announced the dissolution of the alliance between the Congress party and Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal. Choudhury cited derogatory public remarks made by Gogoi against Congress leadership as the primary driver for the split, noting that the Raijor Dal leader failed to address internal grievances through established party forums.
