Chidambaram Criticizes Lack of Legislative Debate in Monsoon Session

Chidambaram argued that the Monsoon Session was marked by a stifling of parliamentary discourse, noting that the Leader of the Opposition and other members were consistently denied the opportunity to speak. He highlighted that while the Tamil Nadu Assembly facilitates active dialogue between ministers and the opposition, Parliament has devolved into a venue where the Speaker frequently silences dissent rather than fostering inquiry.

A central point of his critique involved the legislation aimed at preventing unfair practices in public examinations. Chidambaram dismissed the bill as a mere "punishment measure" that fails to address the root causes of malpractice. He invoked the proverb regarding locking a stable door after the horse has bolted, pointing out that existing criminal laws already cover these offenses. He argued that the legislation has proven ineffective, citing recent examination cancellations in Maharashtra and Rajasthan as evidence that the new law has failed its stated purpose.
