Maraj had been hired by a local family to conduct religious rites in their home. According to investigators, he isolated the victim at a private location, claiming the specialized ceremony was necessary to purge her of possession. Instead of the promised healing, police report he used the setting to commit sexual assault.
Durham Regional Police confirmed the arrest on Wednesday and stated that Maraj faces a single count of sexual assault. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing. Authorities have publicly expressed concern that the suspect may have targeted other individuals under similar pretenses.
