Sean Grayson, Convicted in Death of Sonya Massey, Dies in Prison

Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder last October for the July 2024 killing of Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman who had called 911 to report a prowler near her Springfield-area home. Body camera footage captured the encounter, showing Grayson ordering Massey to move a pot of water from her stove. When Massey said, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus," Grayson threatened her, drew his weapon, and fired three times. A fellow deputy, Dawson Farley, later testified that he never viewed Massey as a threat.

Following his sentencing in January, Grayson sought medical release, citing stage four colon cancer that had spread to his liver and lungs. The Illinois Prisoner Review Board rejected his request last month. The case sparked national outrage and prompted the passage of the Sonya Massey Act, which mandates stricter background checks for law enforcement recruits. Additionally, the Department of Justice reached an agreement with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office to overhaul its crisis response and behavioral health training protocols.
