IFC Invests $30.7 Million to Boost Bangladesh Drug Manufacturing

A $30.7 million loan from the International Finance Corporation is helping Popular Pharmaceuticals PLC secure essential raw materials amid Bangladesh's ongoing foreign currency constraints. By stabilizing the supply of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, the financing aims to maintain production volumes for the country's population of 170 million.

The capital injection addresses a critical vulnerability in the local healthcare sector, where manufacturers still import roughly 90 percent of their raw materials. For Popular Pharmaceuticals, one of the nation's top ten drugmakers, the longer-tenor U.S. dollar facility provides the liquidity necessary to prevent production bottlenecks. This investment is bolstered by an additional $64.1 million in mobilized private capital, reflecting broader market confidence in the domestic pharmaceutical industry's resilience.

Beyond stabilizing current operations, the funding targets the expansion of the company’s hormone division. This shift into specialized manufacturing is expected to create 330 high-skilled positions, with a specific mandate to increase female workforce participation by at least 60 percent. Managing Director Dr. Mostafizur Rahman noted that the partnership serves as a cornerstone for the company’s 2030 growth strategy, which focuses on entering complex therapeutic areas and enhancing technical capabilities. The project aligns with both the National Health Compact 2025 and the World Bank Group’s objective to expand affordable healthcare access globally.
