English told authorities she was influenced by the actions of Luigi Mangione and initially harbored plans to target other high-profile figures, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Defense attorney Maria Jacob described the episode as a desperate cry for help fueled by fears regarding the political climate. In a letter to the court, Bessent noted the broader danger such threats pose to the rule of law, while Judge Contreras expressed hope that English’s time in custody has provided a path toward stability.
