Tech Stocks Slide as Bond Yields Hit Multi-Year Peaks

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq tumbled Tuesday as a volatile mix of surging oil prices and long-term bond yields rattled investor confidence. Geopolitical friction between Washington and Tehran, following the expiration of a critical ceasefire agreement, fueled fears of persistent inflation and higher borrowing costs for major growth companies.

Brent crude futures climbed 0.4% toward three-week highs after Iran shifted to an offensive military stance. This escalation followed the U.S. decision to let a ceasefire agreement lapse on August 17, effectively ending hopes for a near-term diplomatic resolution. The resulting energy price pressure combined with a sharp rise in Treasury yields to create a hostile environment for equities.

The 30-year Treasury yield reached levels unseen since 2007, while the 10-year benchmark maintained its highest position since January 2025. This environment proved particularly damaging for technology giants. Tesla and Nvidia suffered notable losses as investors recalibrated the cost of borrowing against future earnings. The downturn extended to storage hardware, where Western Digital and SanDisk saw shares retreat. With the VIX index signaling a spike in market anxiety, the broader tech sector struggled to find a floor amid the ongoing macroeconomic squeeze.
