European Markets Slide as Oil Prices Surge on Geopolitical Friction

Brent crude climbed toward $90 a barrel on Tuesday as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran stalled, rattling investors across Europe. The resulting uncertainty over energy supplies triggered a broad retreat in equities, pushing the pan-European STOXX 600 index to its fifth consecutive session of losses by mid-morning.

The benchmark index shed 0.5% as of 0849 GMT, reflecting a market increasingly sensitive to regional instability. While energy producers managed a modest 0.3% gain, the broader atmosphere remained pessimistic. Technology stocks bore the brunt of the sell-off, led by a 5.7% plunge in Huber+Suhner shares following a report of weaker-than-expected profits and orders.

Basic resources sectors also retreated, pressured by a dip in gold prices. Investors are holding their breath for the release of the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting minutes, looking for clarity on inflation trajectories and future rate adjustments. The combination of stagnant peace talks and volatile commodity markets has left traders wary of further downside risks.
