US Ambassador Gor Looks to India’s Electoral Model for Voter ID Reform

Gor specifically championed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a legislative proposal currently backed by President Donald Trump. He pointed to India’s recent electoral cycle, where more than 660 million citizens cast ballots with minimal reliance on mail-in systems, as evidence that in-person verification is both scalable and effective. The ambassador framed the push for mandatory photo identification and physical proof of citizenship as a non-partisan necessity to modernize federal standards.

The proposed SAVE America Act would impose rigorous requirements on voter registration, moving away from broad mail-in access and restricting it to specific cases such as military service or documented illness. Furthermore, the legislation directs states to purge non-citizens from federal registries. While the White House characterizes the measure as a bipartisan effort to secure the ballot box, the proposal remains central to the administration's broader campaign to overhaul national voting procedures by mirroring international standards.
