The analysis, published in the journal Economies, challenges the assumption that only frontier technologies fuel development. By examining data from ten African nations—including Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya—researchers Seth Asiamah and his colleagues found that incremental innovators outperformed non-innovating firms by 73.9% in total employment. Crucially, these small-scale improvements to existing products and processes increased unskilled labor demand by 41.9%, offering a vital bridge for economies constrained by infrastructure gaps and limited technical workforces.
The Risks of Radical Innovation
In contrast, radical innovation presents a more selective picture. While such breakthroughs boost demand for specialists, they show no statistically significant impact on total employment or unskilled labor. This creates a potential mismatch: firms competing for a narrow pool of high-skill talent may unintentionally widen inequality rather than creating broad-based opportunity. Similarly, organizational and product innovations tend to favor permanent staff, often bypassing the broader workforce.
For policymakers, the findings suggest a 'ladder' approach rather than a leap. While sophisticated technologies are necessary for long-term global competitiveness, they require parallel investments in vocational training to be inclusive. In the immediate term, supporting process and incremental upgrades—such as removing production bottlenecks or refining logistics—allows firms to expand capacity without rendering existing workers obsolete. By focusing on these accessible improvements, African economies can foster a more sustainable path to job creation that builds technical capability from the ground up.
