Pentagon Reaffirms India Ties Amid Command Naming Shift

Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge A. Colby emphasized that the shift to the PACOM designation aligns with national security priorities rather than a demotion of regional ties. He addressed concerns during a virtual briefing, noting that while the military must prioritize the arc running from Japan through Taiwan and the Philippines, this does not diminish the significance of the Indian Ocean.

Colby pointed to his recent diplomatic visits as evidence of Washington’s commitment to New Delhi. He acknowledged that the two nations may not always hold identical views, yet he characterized the relationship as a natural partnership. The U.S. strategy, he explained, focuses on practical cooperation—such as intelligence sharing, training, and maritime capabilities—rather than seeking formal allegiance from regional partners. By encouraging countries to bolster their own defense industries, the administration aims to enhance collective deterrence throughout the Indo-Pacific.
