Congress Stages Nationwide Protests Following Haldwani Rally Incident

Thousands of Congress workers took to the streets across India on Friday, demanding a formal apology from the Sangh Parivar. The demonstrations were triggered by reports that a purification ritual was performed at a rally stage in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, immediately after AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge concluded his address there.

In Malappuram, AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal led a march from the District Collectorate to the local party headquarters, signaling a coordinated national pushback against the alleged insult. Party leadership views the 'shuddhikaran' ritual as a targeted act of disrespect toward Kharge, who had visited the site to rally support ahead of the 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections.

The controversy reached the floor of the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, where Kharge defended his speech as a critique of systemic public grievances rather than a sectarian attack. While BJP Leader of the House JP Nadda promised a formal investigation into the matter, Congress officials maintain that the ritual serves as a deliberate provocation by BJP affiliates to undermine opposition leadership.
