Latvian ground teams are currently combing a dense, forested region near the village of Rugaji, located roughly 35 kilometers from the Russian border, to recover the wreckage. Military spokesperson Iveta Berzina confirmed that the origin of the device remains unverified as terrain challenges, including bogs and thick vegetation, hinder the recovery effort. According to Latvian officials, these incursions are increasingly linked to Russian electromagnetic warfare activities that interfere with drone navigation systems.
NATO spokesperson Allison Hart stated that the alliance maintains a 24/7 watch over its eastern flank, noting that the incident is under formal investigation. This event follows a series of similar drone spillover cases in the Baltic states, including previous interceptions by Romanian and French fighters earlier this year. In response to the heightened regional volatility, Finland temporarily restricted maritime and aviation traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland. Regional security concerns are mounting, with Baltic nations increasing surveillance around critical infrastructure such as power plants and gas facilities to mitigate the risk of accidental or deliberate provocations.
