Beijing Dismisses Taiwan’s Han Kuang Drills as Wasteful Charade

China’s Ministry of National Defence slammed Taiwan’s ten-day Han Kuang military exercises on Friday, labeling the annual drills a wasteful charade. Beijing’s first official response to the ongoing simulations accused the Democratic Progressive Party of stoking war panic and militarizing civilian infrastructure to provoke unnecessary regional instability.

The exercises, which focus on countering potential blockades and protecting critical infrastructure, introduced new protocols this year, including measures to restrict mobile internet access during a conflict. Spokesperson Chen Xi dismissed these efforts as political posturing, asserting that Taiwan is attempting to turn its cities into battlefields.

Despite Beijing’s rhetoric, the People’s Liberation Army maintains a near-daily presence in the airspace and waters surrounding the island. China continues to claim sovereignty over Taiwan, refusing to renounce the use of force to achieve unification. Taipei, however, maintains that its future remains a matter solely for its own citizens to decide, continuing the drills as a necessary deterrent against the escalating military activity across the Taiwan Strait.
