European Markets Stall as Oil Prices Climb on Iran Naval Blockade

A threat of an indefinite U.S. naval blockade against Iran has pushed oil prices to $87.93 a barrel, forcing European investors to balance a robust corporate earnings season against the looming risk of supply disruptions and renewed geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

The STOXX 600 index edged up 0.05% to 659.65 in Friday morning trading, clinging to record highs despite being on track for a weekly decline. While the index remains resilient, gains were uneven across sectors. Technology stocks surged 1.4%, but basic resources faced a 1.6% drop as traders reacted to the heightened uncertainty surrounding global commodity flows.

Corporate performance continues to provide a floor for equity valuations. Second-quarter profit expectations for Europe’s blue-chip companies have climbed for eight straight weeks, with aggregate STOXX 600 earnings now projected to rise 23.4%. This momentum, fueled primarily by the energy and materials sectors, has helped offset anxieties regarding stalled diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.

Looking ahead, market focus is shifting toward incoming euro zone employment and GDP figures. These data points are critical for gauging the regional economic health, particularly as investors digest softer U.S. inflation readings that suggest the Federal Reserve may refrain from further monetary tightening.
