Ukrainian Drone Operators Dominate US Forces in German War Games

During the Combined Resolve exercise in Germany this spring, Ukrainian drone teams repeatedly outmaneuvered American troops, at one point effectively neutralizing an entire US armored brigade. The drills highlighted a stark reality: the US military remains vulnerable to the low-cost, high-frequency drone tactics mastered by Kyiv on the front lines.

The exercise, held over two weeks in April and May, turned into a sobering lesson for NATO forces. Ukrainian operators, drawing on years of combat against Russia, identified and simulated the destruction of US vehicles and infantry so rapidly that commanders were forced to reset units to maintain the training schedule. These small, inexpensive drones proved far more elusive and lethal than the sophisticated systems the Pentagon traditionally prioritizes.

US forces eventually adjusted their tactics, focusing on better dispersion and electronic warfare countermeasures, but the disparity in experience remained evident. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich noted that the exposure to Ukrainian methods provides training impossible to replicate domestically. By the end of the rotation, the Ukrainians shifted to coaching American soldiers on offensive drone operations, showcasing the evolution from theoretical doctrine to hard-won field expertise. This underscores a shift in global defense priorities, as Washington now evaluates purchasing Ukrainian-developed drone technology to bolster its own inventory.
