The deal hinges on a transition to 3 gigawatts of new power generation, with the facility shifting to fully renewable electricity by 2033. This move is projected to slash the plant’s carbon footprint by 25%. Facing an uncertain future due to unsustainable energy costs, the smelter will now invest A$1.1 billion into its own modernization, including A$100 million specifically earmarked for decarbonization projects.
By 2028, the government-owned Snowy Hydro is expected to step in to fulfill the smelter's massive power requirements. This long-term energy arrangement provides a lifeline for the site's workforce of more than 1,000 employees, stabilizing a critical link in the domestic industrial supply chain.
