Ukraine and Moldova Strike Rail Deal to Bypass Port Blockades

Ukrainian grain exports are finding a new path through Moldova after Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi secured a 50% discount on rail cargo shipments. This agreement, effective until the end of the year, aims to mitigate the economic damage caused by sustained Russian attacks on vital Black Sea port infrastructure.

The transit corridor is expected to handle approximately 600,000 metric tons of grain. While this volume represents roughly 10% of Ukraine's total export capacity, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development in Moldova confirmed the nation is fully prepared to manage the influx.

Despite the steep price cuts, Moldova’s state railway operator expects a net increase in revenue driven by the surge in cargo throughput. Regional authorities are currently coordinating infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the additional rail traffic, positioning Moldova as a key logistical partner in stabilizing global food supply chains during the ongoing conflict.
