Indonesia Dismisses Taiwan Concerns Over Upcoming Naval Drills with China

The Indonesian vessel I Gusti Ngurah Rai is scheduled to conduct navigation exercises with Chinese forces near Taiwan in mid-August. While Taipei’s Mainland Affairs Council views the proximity of these maneuvers as a direct threat, Indonesian officials maintain that the drills are standard maritime traditions conducted during transit. The Indonesian navy explicitly stated that the exercises are not tied to any combat scenarios.

This friction arrives as Taiwan concludes its own Han Kuang war games, which were designed to simulate defenses against potential Chinese incursions. Taiwan continues to assert that its future must be determined solely by its own citizens, pushing back against China’s expansive claims over the surrounding waters. Despite the heightened sensitivity in the Taiwan Strait, Jakarta insists its naval cooperation remains strictly within the scope of non-combatant maritime protocols.
