E-scooter Riders Face Higher Trauma Risks Than Motorcyclists

Electric scooters are proving more dangerous than traditional motorbikes, with riders facing a significantly higher risk of severe head and internal organ trauma. A comprehensive analysis of major trauma data from 18 cities across England and Wales reveals that the design of these vehicles is a primary factor in the spike.

David Bodansky, a trauma surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, tracked crash data between 2020 and 2022 to identify a troubling pattern. E-scooter users are three times more likely to suffer brain injuries or vascular damage compared to motorcyclists. While the risk of fractures remains lower for e-scooter riders, the nature of their accidents is frequently more catastrophic. Bodansky attributes this to the small wheels, which easily snag in potholes and launch riders head-first over the handlebars.

Safety compliance is also alarmingly low, with fewer than 6% of injured riders reporting the use of a helmet. The data highlights a gender disparity as well: women are involved in 33% more collisions than men and are twice as likely to sustain serious injuries. Researchers suggest that handlebar heights, often optimized for male physiology, contribute to increased chest trauma for female riders. With children accounting for 16% of all recorded injuries, experts are pushing for mandatory safety training and stricter design standards, noting that the current proliferation of these devices on public roads—despite existing legal restrictions—demands immediate regulatory intervention.
