Taiwan Denounces Chinese Naval Drills with Indonesia

While the Indonesian navy maintains that the activities are merely traditional passing exercises conducted during a return voyage from Russia, Taiwan views the diplomatic optics as a direct challenge to the regional status quo.

Despite the political fallout, Taiwanese military officials have downplayed the immediate tactical risk. Wu Tien-jen, assistant deputy chief of the general staff for intelligence, noted that the vessel remains roughly 70 to 80 nautical miles from the coast and poses no direct threat. Nevertheless, the geopolitical implications remain significant. By integrating foreign partners into its operations in these contested waters, Beijing is signaling a broader reach, forcing Taipei to confront a persistent effort to erode its strategic buffer. The timing of the announcement, coinciding with Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang war games, underscores the mounting pressure on the island’s defense establishment to counter China’s expanding maritime footprint.
