Instead, the complaint alleges that in 1996, Singh reinvented his identity by submitting a new immigration application featuring a different date of birth and entry history. This maneuver eventually allowed him to secure lawful permanent residency in 2000 and full citizenship by 2008. The Justice Department now argues that his naturalization was illegally procured through willful misrepresentation. This case is part of a broader federal push; since January 20, 2025, the Department of Justice has filed approximately 123 civil denaturalization complaints, marking a record-high volume of such litigation.
